A Tiny Seed...

It has been a fantastic week in Year 1.  We have been up to all sorts of wonderful things, but most importantly we have performed in our Summer Concert. Thank you to everyone who came to watch, it was a most enjoyable show.  Without a doubt, the stars of the concert were indeed the Year 1s with their cool Grease routine.

Here are a few comments from the children...
Elizabeth:  It was kinda scary when all the Mums and Dads were in the audience, but then when we started enjoying ourselves we forgot we were even nervous.  My favourite part was the Grease song!

Lily:  It was lots of fun and my favourite part of the show was Hakuna Matata!  We loved it so much.

This week we have been planting seeds because our new topic is Growth and Changes.  We found lots of leaves in the forest and we even had a plant expert helping us... Mr Marfleet.  He ensured that none of us left the forest without understanding photosynthesis in it's entirety!

He told us all about the different names of leaves.  He also said leaves were for breathing and they make sugar.  (Erin)
Their pipes take the sugar up and down the tree.  The roots collect the water. (Rahin)

In ICT we used Paint to draw, we labelled them and printed them ourselves.  I wrote my name in the biggest font there was! (Elizabeth)
We planted runner beans, sunflower, radishes, pumpkins, tomatoes, poppies.  (Erin)

We have been learning about poetry and have written our own versions of Five Enormous Dinosaurs.  These were thoroughly entertaining!
For 'Show & Tell' poetry was our focus and we shared some fantastic poems.  Here is just one of the fine examples of what we experienced...

Saturday Night
One Saturday night in London I went to a restaurant
The waiter took us to table eighteen
for my starter I ordered one ice-cream
Then I ate lots of things I had never tried before
Some were mucky
Some were yucky
Some were funny
Some were yummy
For pudding I had some homemade apple pie
Then we paid the bill "Thank you, Bye!"

At Strumpshaw Fen we went pond dipping and I caught a fish.  Next I put the creatures in a big pot.  Then we went to the meadow.  While we were at Strumpshaw Fen we had lunch and it was yummy.  Finally we went into the woods.    - William C.

On Monday we went to amazing Strumpshaw Fen.  The flowers were blooming and the sky was beautiful.  We had to go across the railway track.  We had lots of fun pond dipping.  I was with Zinhle and we learned a lot.  I found a lot of creatures.  I found woodlouse and i found a lot of beetles and I noticed they were really pretty.  I felt a lot of scales on the woodlice.  - Elizabeth.

When I was bug hunting in the meadow, I found lots of bugs and I saw lots of ladybirds in my net but they flew away.  -Bibi.

Dinosaurs Galore!

We started the week by exploring the Natural History Museum website to find information about dinosaurs.  The children were fascinated by how many different dinosaurs there were and how much scientists have discovered about them all.  During Forest Schools, we spent our time digging and exploring looking for evidence of Pre-historic life at THLPS.  The children used their imaginations and some rather 'interesting' things were found.

The children investigated different ways to join paper to make a moving dinosaur and discovered that split-pins were the best.  They then used this knowledge to create their own moving dinosaurs which they decorated using a variety of different media.

We have been learning about non-fiction books and using these to research dinosaur facts and information.  Using the facts that we have learned, we have made our own information text. To make our writing more appealing to the reader, we used a variety of different sentence openers.

Week Ahead:
Wednesday, 7th May at 2.30pm - KS1 & EYFS Summer Concert (look forward to seeing you all there)
Thursday, 8th May - Whole school photograph (please ensure children wear correct Summer uniform)

Coming soon:
Year 1 Trip Strumpshaw Fen
This is always a lovely trip.  We are looking for a few more parent helpers to join us, so please let us know if you are able to help out.
