All About Me Geography week in Year 1

This week we have been learning all about Great Britain and what the Union Flag is made up of.  We have been creating our own pictures of the United Kingdom and Union Flag using any materials of our choice! There were some wonderful creations!
We all brought in maps and globes so that we could stand up in front of our class to show our friends where our families and friends come from or where we have been.  Quite a lot of us have relatives in Australia!

Mrs Pimlott even taught us a new song to practise with skipping ropes on the playground or at home ‘England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales…….’!

This week our school has been very lucky as something very exciting has been happening! On our sports field we have been experiencing an archaeological dig!  Year 1 were lucky enough to be involved by going up for a talk and getting to see some of the amazing things that have been uncovered.  I'm sure you can read all about what we found in Thorpe House Langley Lines.

We have been spending our week in maths measuring length, using non standard units of measure ….
‘Karl was measuring the reception children.  Me and Sofia were measuring the hula hoops.  We were using string.’ - Connie
We learnt that we can measure a curved lines by using string and then comparing them.
‘We were finding things that were the same length.’ - Bronwyn
‘We read a book about growing.’ - Carolina

Who is this superstar!!!?

In English we have been doing poetry in prep for next week!! We have been listening to lots of Dr Seuss stories, we even got creative and made our own plates of horrid food ready to write our own rhyming ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ poems.
Looking forward to seeing all your lovely costumes next Thursday for our Dr Seuss poetry dress up day!!!

Year 1 have had a fantastic second week, they have all settled in so well, its like they’ve been my class forever!
During our ‘All about me’ topic we thought about what we might like to be when we grow up…there were some great ideas! From horse rider to explorer they all have lovely ideas to do something they love!

Forest schools was especially exciting this week as we got to take a visit to our old school site!  This entailed lots of running down hills, and exploring new climbing trees.  We collected natural pieces that we could to back to school and use to make our own portraits!  I think you’ll agree they were beautiful portraits and they had some inventive ways of making their eyes, ears, nose and hair!

All about Us

Wow, what a week!  We have been busy with all sorts of activities and the children have taken to their new routine like ducks to water!  It has been just lovely getting to know each other and there have been plenty of funny moments already!

Just a snippet of the things we have been up to- plenty of counting and number work (the children have been showing us how brilliantly they understand the number system), labels and captions on a family picture, texturised Picasso-style abstract portraits, and 'Me in a Bag' to name a few..

Lois' caption about her family: 'Mummy is helpful, Daddy is funny, My brother is naughty, I am great!' (made me giggle)

On interviewing a few of the children about their first week, it has to be said that their response formed a lump in my throat.  'Out of everything about being back at school, the best thing has been getting to know the new girl in our class.'  What a special bunch of children who see value in each other already! I echo my sentiments from earlier... I am the luckiest teacher in the world! This is an incredible class.

Introducing the cutest class of 2014-2015....

Amazing group... I think I must be the luckiest teacher in the world! Exciting times ahead :))
