What goes up…

We put a bag over a toaster to see if it would go high.  The smaller ones didn’t go very high, but the biggest one touched the ceiling.  Everyone screamed!  Lois

DSCF1748

We put all sorts of bags above the hot toaster to get hot air in.  They all floated.  The big one went the highest, the medium one went a little bit high and the small one went up only a tiny bit.  They go up because they have hot air in them. – Carolina

DSCF1749We started to get really curious and were trying to warm the air in all sorts of different things, to make them float too.

Karl suggested we try an orange, Carolina suggested we try a bottle and Connie suggested we try a balloon.

The bottle didn’t fly because it was too heavy and because the hole was too small to get lots of hot air into it.  - Freya

I predicted that the balloon would float.  When we did the test I saw that it did get some air in it, but it didn’t float.  I think this is because the hole is too small and only a little bit of air can get into it.  - Sophia

The orange doesn’t have a hole so nothing could go in it and is too heavy. – CarolinaDSCF1763DSCF1753

We went to the dining hall to see if the bag would go higher in the room.  It zoomed right above Mr Brown and Mr Beaumont’s heads!  - John

It’s a long way to Tipperary…

February marks the start of National Storytellers Week, and with that in mind, Year 1 have been storytelling about their journeys – factual and fictional!

Christopher told us all about his journey to France. He got to ride on a donkey!

Romily adventured to a jungle far away and sneakily brought a monkey back from the jungle.

Carolina told us about her trip to Brazil and she had pictures of jaguars and all sorts of animals that you see in Brazil.

Cameron F. travelled to France.  He had a wonderful booklet about his holiday, full of pictures on the aeroplane and in the car in France.  He says the cars drive on the other side of the road!

Cameron R. told us about when she journeyed a long way on an aeroplane to Disneyland in North America.  Her mummy wrapped lots of presents up for her to open on the plane.  She saw Tinkerbell, the Magic Castle and many parades.

Maya went to Turkey on a plane – it took 4 hours to get there.  She said she kept asking: ‘Are we there yet?’ and everyone kept giggling.  She learnt to swim in Turkey. She met a friend called Daisy who was from Florida.

Freya went on a ride on her pony and even had a pony party.  She did a few jumps and says you have to lean back and tighten the reigns up, making sure you have your heels down so that you don’t fall off.

Cerys told us how to get to Disneyland.  She used 3 types of transport, a car, a coach and a boat.  She met a friend called Anya and had lots of wonderful photographs to show all her friends.

Connie went to France and swam in a scary swimming pool that was too deep to stand in.  She saw the Eiffel Tower and went to a French Restaurant for a little snack and she thinks they ordered their food in French! She also got lost in the railway station… we are so glad you found your way in the end, Connie!

Daisy went to Disneyland on a train and saw Ariel, Anna, Elsa, Belle and Snow White.  She went with her Mum and her favourite part was when she went on a ride under a tunnel and could see Anna and Elsa, and also Ariel in the water.

Sophia brought a necklace that she got in Barbados, where she swam with the turtles.  She stayed in a hotel and it was really hot.  They went on a plane for 8 hours.

Sophie went on a journey with Marfee Bear to see Peter Pan the cinema.  He ate all her popcorn.  They also watched the Muppets and Pocahontas together.DSCF1766DSCF1769DSCF1772DSCF1775DSCF1776DSCF1777

Bronwyn told us a story about her heart being frozen.  She said it felt like a thousand men were chopping the ice on her heart!

Up Up and Away…

The experiments have continued to take our learning to new heights this week as we have become curiouser and curiouser!! (Mr Oldroyd’s assembly on Monday kick-started the process of being curious about EVERYTHING - thank you Mr Oldroyd!)   The boys and girls have been very excited about playing detectives to solve mysteries and the investigations have been fantastic!  We have learnt about density in particular, and the children experimented with hot and cold air.  Please ask the Year 1 children what the hot air did…  We also watched a water experiment where the same principle was very visual – the red hot water went to the top and the blue cold water sunk to the bottom.  We also saw a recorded experiment where a boy made his own video of how to make a hovercraft.  This inspired the children to make their own video of an experiment.
We learned how to record the Prediction, Test and Result elements of an investigation using an ipad.  The boys and girls have made fantastic videos of themselves carrying out their balloon experiments.

There was steaming hot water, I really liked it because the balloon on the bottle went up. - Cameron R

The hot water makes the balloon get air into it. - Sophia

There is no more space in the bottle for the hot air to go, so it goes upwards into the balloon. - Carolina

It was fun doing the experiment because the balloons kept blowing up!  - Daisy

We didn't see air in the balloon and had to wait a long time for it to warm up.  - Sophie

Ready, Steady… GO!

Just look at us getting quicker and quicker! So many of us beat our personal best times in our PE lesson… BRILLIANT!!!! Mr Beaumont says ‘Keep up the good work!’

Everyone tried their hardest to win, but it was all about the fun! – Lois

It was fun and nearly everyone got green dots! – Cameron F

I love the cross country because running makes you fit! – Connie

We all tried to beat our time… I did! – John

I got my green dot for the first time, I am so happy! – Maya

I found it so funny because I fell over twice.  I just got back up and went back to the race.  I couldn’t stop giggling!  - Karl

Cross country running is fun! – Carolina

Cross country is my favourite time of the week! – Cerys

I like Cross Country because you get fresh air and you get to run! – Freya

Everytime you beat your time, you get a green dot.  I got mine today and last time! – Cameron R

It was really fun and I won today!  - Romily

Cross Country is the best thing ever! – Bronwyn

I ran my fastest because I wanted to win!  - Sophia

I love running in the woods because there are lots of trees! – Christopher

We ran through the forest as fast as we could! – Sophie

Sometimes we hear birds and see squirrels in the woods! – Daisy

Experiments and Science Week!

This week the children were all asked to go home and have some fun with experiments!  The children have all come up with something different and we have had some wonderful show and tells!  The children have taken it in turn to do their experiments for their peers and then explain what the outcome of their experiments mean.

DSCF1672Sophia bought in a wonderful kit full of different experiments!

DSCF1674DSCF1673

Freya taught us why boiled eggs and raw eggs act differently when spun.

DSCF1676DSCF1675

Christopher brought in raisons, water and fizzy drink and showed us that raisons will float in fizzy drink but not in water.

DSCF1677DSCF1679

Sophie told us that her leeks soaked up the coloured water and turned that shade.

DSCF1680

Bronwyn filled a cup with water and then put coins in to show what would happen to the water.

DSCF1683DSCF1682

Carolina taught us that bean seeds can grow in a jam jar, all they need is light and water!

DSCF1684DSCF1685

Romily and Maya had similar exggsperiments,  they showed us that an egg will sink in plain water but when you add salt to the water they will float.  Maya even explained to us that it was the salt that made the water denser!

DSCF1686

Maya also showed us how strong egg shells are, she said that because of the shape we could squeeze them really hard and they would not break….she also brought in lots for everyone to try…wish us luck!

Art

In art this week we have been making papier mache hot air balloons, we have started to make the structure of them and will finish by decorating them.  We have been learning about the Montgolfier Brothers who were the inventers of the very first hot air balloon,  this was the first successful launching of a manned ascent in the 1700’s!

The Hundred Square

In maths this week we have been learning about the 100 square and looking at the different patterns it holds.  We all worked together on Thursday to create our own huge floor 100 square…our trick was that we weren't allowed to put the numbers down in order, we filled in the gaps, found the patterns, worked together and we finished it!

Some homework for you!….Hopefully your children will come home and ask you to show them some patterns that you can find in the hundred square.  Have fun finding as many patterns as you can!  If you ‘can’t’ spot any, they may just give you a little lesson!

DSCF1688DSCF1689

We learnt about index pages this week with Mrs Nichols; index pages tell the numbers of the things you want to look at, and index pages are very important…Lois

Performing Arts

We joined with reception for our lesson as magical things are happening in both Year 1 and Reception class…reception have adopted fairies and in Year 1 are toys are coming alive!

Miss Leggett turned into a transformer, she was called Beebot and she had a party and all the transformer children joined the party.  A little later, we were all magically turned into different toys and creatures and our bodies started doing crazy dancing – like robots, frogs and everything we could imagine!

I was a dog, Elsa and a Princess.  I was Elsa, a Princess and an Angel. By Sophia and Cerys

Around the School

In forest schools Mrs Rowell is going to show us how to make a fire…we might even get to toast marshmallows! We will be learning about the health and safety involved which will then mean we can start to get more involved in the following weeks!

In French we have been learning family names.  We have been drawing pictures of our family and labelling them with the correct French name.  The children have incredible French pronunciation!

This week in P.E. we ran the whole cross country course, right through the woods! Mrs P might be joining us next week…

In music we are making up our own song, we worked together and even used the instruments!

Kings and Queens

At lunchtimes we  have all been trying our hardest to use our best manners! The children have been keeping their elbows off the table, holding their fork the right way round, pouring themselves cups of water, sitting beautifully with straight backs and keeping their elbows tucked in.  On top of that we have been looking for polite conversation and kind behaviour.  If the children are doing all these things (or excelling at one of them)  they get to wear the crown and be the king or queen of the banquet! This week, we have had several children opt for fruit for pudding (kiwi over chocolate pudding… well done Sophie!) and another person have a try of beetroot! Well done Year 1!
